Annotation: Todd Hewitt lives in Prentisstown, a place where all the men can hear each other’s thoughts, in which they refer to as “the Noise.” There is no women in this town, for all the women died when Todd was just a baby.
Summary: Todd Hewitt lives in a town where all the women are dead and all the men can hear each other’s thoughts. The Noise, it’s a collective stream of consciousnesses pouring out into the world and into the minds of the rest of the town. Todd is twelve, about to be thirteen, an age that will define him as a man. When he is out in the woods, alone, he discovers something, a silent something. This silent something is not supposed to exist, which leads him to uncover a girl. Thus begins book one of the Chaos Walking trilogy.
Evaluation: A very creative story by Patrick Ness with vivid descriptions of the New World and an almost uncanny idea of the human race. The ending almost forces you to pick up the sequel as it is unfinished and unresolved—so have it ready to go, otherwise you may find yourself a little angry.
Bibliotherapeutic Usefulness:
- Identifying with who you are.
- Taking a chance on the unknown.
Reason this book was chosen: I love any novel that incorporates a dystopian world. Patrick Ness’s adventure series is quiet different as the story takes place in a world where all the women have died from a virus and all the men can hear each other’s thoughts.
