Annotation: Two vulnerable teens with plenty of wit and wisdom accidentally meet up in a club, begin “dating” within five minutes, and share an adventurous first date set against the backdrop of New York City.

Summary: At a New York Club one night Nick, a bass player in a queercore punk band convinces a stranger, Norah--a pessimistic girl with a passion for good music, to pose as his girlfriend in order to fool the girl who broke his heart, which happens to be one of Norah’s friends. During this pseudo relationship a kiss happens, in which unleashing an entire night filled with all the ups, downs, and sideways that being a teen in today’s world brings.

Evaluation: LOVED! The dialog is realistic and yes that means foul language (like the F word) but teens today are hyper aware of this kind of language—in all honestly they most likely use this language on a daily basis. That is why this book is such a win, it is relatable (whether we as adults like it or not). And with that relatable component comes more teen readers.

Bibliotherapeutic Usefulness:
  • Depicts the depths of love and how it’s not always puppy dogs and rainbows.
  • Music can heal you, if you let it.
  • Real love doesn't require conditions.
  • You shouldn't have to change just to be with someone, they should accept you the way you are.
Reason this book was chosen: As a music lover, I was instantly attracted to the story. I also saw the movie and fell in love with it. Although, it should be noted that the movie is very different from the book.
